Pilates
Deepika Suggests 6 Pilates Principles

PilatePilates is a functional training that trains the entire body and mind by generating strength from the core and stabilizing the spine.

It stretches and strengthens the muscles and tendons while the entire body works out on choreographed moves .functional exercises are the workout of the future as they prepare the body for day to day moves like lifting your baby. They strengthen the muscles from inside out, giving a leaner taller definition without adding bulk. You can however see it as a fitness class that strengthens abs, back and pelvic floor muscles while working out on the entire body.

The Pilates method is based upon the ideal of well being and not another mind numbing quick-fix solution. It is a whole body workout that trains the small, skeletal weak and innermost most muscles of the body, while also working out the outer larger and stronger muscles. It is a choreography of exercises that flows from one to another.

Six principles are the foundation of the Pilates approach to exercise. Their application to the Pilates method of exercise is part of what makes it unique in the fitness world.

  • Centering: Physically bringing the focus to the center of the body, the powerhouse area between the lower ribs and pubic bone. Energetically, Pilates exercises are sourced from center.
  • Concentration: If one brings full attention to the exercise and does it with full commitment, maximum value will be obtained from each movement.
  • Control: Every Pilates exercise is done with complete muscular control. No body part is left to its own devices.
  • Precision: In Pilates, awareness is sustained throughout each movement. There is an appropriate placement, alignment relative to other body parts, and trajectory for each part of the body.
  • Breath: Think the lungs as a bellows -- using them strongly to pump the air fully in and out of the body. Most Pilates exercises coordinate with the breath, and using the breath properly is an integral part of Pilates exercise.
  • Flow: Pilates exercise is done in a flowing manner. Fluidity, grace, and ease are goals applied to all exercises. The energy of an exercise connects all body parts and flows through the body in an even way. Pilates equipment, like the reformer, are very good mirrors of one's flow and concentration as they tend to bang around and suddenly become quite "machine-like" if one loses ones control and flow.

The Pilates principles may sound a bit abstract, but the integration of these principles accounts for the balance, grace, and ease that one can experience as a result of practicing Pilates.

Strength N Flexibility

Strength and FlexibilityStrength training and flexibility training should go hand in hand. It is a common misconception that there must always be a trade-off between flexibility and strength. Obviously, if you neglect flexibility training altogether in order to train for strength then you are certainly sacrificing flexibility (and vice versa). However, performing exercises for both strength and flexibility need not sacrifice either one. As a matter of fact, flexibility training and strength training can actually enhance one another.

Power Yoga “Suryanamaskar”

Surya Namaskar is a series of twelve physical postures. These alternating backward and forward bending postures flex and stretch the spinal area at its maximum range, and thus give a stretch to the whole body. Surya Namaskar has a deep effect in detoxifying the organs through constant oxygenation, and has a deeper relaxing effect," says Deepika, Fitness instructor. "The asana gives you overall flexibility, while making you fit and active. It also helps improve your immune and digestive system.

The postures range from stretching and bending to flexing your muscles, while constantly breathing-in and breathing-out at regular intervals. The stretching and bending offers a complete body workout, whereas the copious inhaling and exhaling helps remove toxins from the body. Therefore Surya Namaskar "the base of power yoga". "Power yoga is basically for those who want to achieve more in less time. Since our lives have become so fast, yoga gives brings a sense of mental calm," she says. Any form of yoga, when practiced, works on five different aspects such as flexibility, cardiovascular endurance, strength, body composition and weight, and Surya Namaskar works on all the five aspects. "The best thing about Surya Namaskar is that anyone can do it, as the postures can be improvised, depending upon body type,"
